Indigenous Voices

As part of our commitment to the TRC’s Calls to Action for Education (#62, 63) and our desire to know every student, the WECDSB recognizes the importance of embedding authentic Indigenous voices and contributions in the curriculum from K-12. We affirm that in so doing, we will commit to celebrate Indigenous stories and brilliance as well as the benefits of seeing with the strengths of both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing and being.

The new logo for WECDSB’s Indigenous Education program is Miishiikaii (meh-she-kah) or turtle. The turtle was chosen as our symbol, as many Indigenous nations and cultures have a special relationship with the turtle. North America is also termed “Miishiikaii Miiniss” or Turtle Island. This image and important accompanying teachings demonstrate our strong connection to our natural world and the underlying concept that “we are all related” -all things are connected. Indigenous Voices

This page will feature spotlights and interviews with Indigenous people who have made contributions, past and present, to our local community and beyond. We hope this spotlight will allow us to come together to celebrate and honour Indigenous voices and brilliance.
