International Day for Persons With Disabilities

Celebrating Inclusion
Posted on 12/01/2023
UN graphicThis Sunday marks the 31st annual United Nations' International Day of Persons With Disabilities, making it a perfect opportunity to showcase how we support students with special education needs in our schools.

"Given that this is a day to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, we felt it was a good time to remind our community that every student is a valued and welcomed member of our Catholic learning environment," said LeeAnn Poisson, the Superintendent who oversees special education for the WECDSB.

"Everything we do in our schools is about creating a sense of belonging and acceptance, and empowering our students so that they can ultimately become independent, active members of their community," she added.

To showcase how students with special needs are supported in our schools, we visited both of our elementary and secondary Day of Champions last spring to get some insight from our curriculum consultants, and also visited the Best Buddies program at F.J. Brennan Catholic High School.
