Mental Health

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is committed to providing all students with the opportunity to reach their academic, emotional, physical and spiritual potential in a safe, caring and inclusive school environment.
Mental Health
As part of the WECDSB's Mental Health and Addiction strategy, which includes a proactive, preventative and supportive approach, the Board will strive to:

  • promote positive mental health
  • reduce stigma associated with mental illness
  • build student social-emotional learning skills
  • identify students in need
  • build pathways to care and treatment

As a part of this approach, the WECDSB is launching a new Parent and Family Engagement section on our website to help provide parents with valuable information about Mental Health and Well-Being, as well as information and facts about a variety of topics, such as risky behaviours, coping with anxiety, and technology use, to name a few. We hope you will refer to this page periodically as we will be continually updating it with new and relevant information.

Well-Being and Mental Health: What is it?

Mental Health is defined by the World Health Organization as, "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community."

The positive dimension of mental health is stressed in WHO's definition of health as contained in its constitution: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." ~ World Health Organization, 2014

In other words, MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH! Mental Health is a positive concept. We all strive to be described as mentally healthy, in the same way that we strive to be physically healthy. It is not just the absence of Mental Illness.
