Welcome to Grade 9

What is De-streaming?

De-streaming is an educational approach by which students in Grade 9 are no longer separated into Academic or Applied level courses. Students work collaboratively in an inclusive and engaging learning environment developing critical skills such as problem solving, communication, inquiry and technology skills. Students with a variety of interests can achieve success by working through a wide range of learning opportunities.

Ontario’s Ministry of Education is committed to addressing system discrimination and helping to break down barriers for Indigenous, Black, and racialized students, students from low-income households, students with disabilities, and students with special education needs.  As part of this commitment, the Ministry of Education has eliminated the streaming of students in Grade 9.

A de-streamed Grade 9 Mathematics course was implemented in September 2021. Click here for the Grade 9 Math: a guide for parents resource.

A new de-streamed Grade 9 Science course was implemented in September 2022. Click here for the Grade 9 Science: a guide for parents resource.

A new de-streamed Grade 9 English course was implemented in September 2023. Click here for the Grade 9 English: a guide for parents resource.

A new de-streamed Grade 9 Geography course will be implemented in September 2024.

French as a Second Language (FSL) is offered as an Academic course.

Locally developed courses remain available for those students who have been receiving significantly modified programming in Grade 8.
