The Muskoka Woods Experience
For more than 25 years, Grade 8 students have been travelling to Muskoka to learn how to become leaders through faith-based outdoor activity.
In keeping with our tradition of providing hope and inspiration, we intend to replicate the experience the best we can through virtual opportunities and school-based activities. Despite the pandemic, we will continue to foster leadership in our students.
Our virtual Muskoka Woods Experience will take place on
May 7, 2021
. This year's events may look different but all Grade 8 students will still experience faith-based activities with inspirational virtual presentations by Fr. Danny Santos from the Diocese of London and motivational speaker and artist Bob Upgren.
The Muskoka spirit will be alive at each school as Grade 8 students will participate in leadership activities that also coincide with the theme of Catholic Education Week.
Catholic Education Week runs from May 2-7. This year's theme is Nurturing Hope, and the week will conclude with our activities on May 7.
The History of Muskoka Woods
The experience began in 1994 with one Grade 8 class and a yellow school bus traveling 550 km to the Muskoka Woods Resort, which is located on over 1,000 beautiful wooded acres and 2,800 feet of shoreline on Lake Rosseau, in the heart of the Muskoka Lakes Region. Since then the experience has evolved into a leadership opportunity for every Grade 8 student and every high school student enrolled in a leadership program within the WECDSB.
Muskoka Woods provides the ideal environment to challenge students through activity, recreation, and faith-based education, in a beautiful outdoor setting. The purpose of the experience is simple:
promote the awareness and importance of youth participation in outdoor recreational activities
provide our students with the opportunity for leadership training and the development of cooperative skills (teamwork)
provide our students with the opportunity for personal growth and confidence through recreational activities - "challenge by choice"
tie it all together in a Catholic environment that is supportive, encouraging and that challenges students and staff to "be their best" …The Muskoka Spirit
