New Catholic Central High School

A Brief History

In November of 2016, then Ontario Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter confirmed that the WECDSB would receive approximately $26M in funding to build a new school to replace Catholic Central High School.

The Board’s original plan called for the school to be located in Windsor’s downtown core at the site of the former Windsor Arena, however after careful consideration, it was decided to purchase an 11-acre piece of property between Ouellette and McDougall Avenues, less than a kilometer south of the school’s present location on Tecumseh Road East.

Where We Are Now

In the beginning of the 2019/20 school year community consultation took place.

On Jan. 28, 2020 the Board approved a recommendation to hire +VG Architects to design the new school. You can read a press release about that decision

Since the community consultation phase has completed, a space template was created to merge the Board's vision with the community voiced recommendations. The Facility Space Template (FST) has been submitted and approved by the Ministry of Education for the project outline. The new school is being designed for an enrollment of 900 students.

Work on the the project design has continued throughout the duration of the COVID 19 pandemic and is now moving towards a schematic framework, with a request for site plan approval recently submitted to the City of Windsor.

Administration from the Board is working with current school staff to develop the individual room data sheets to develop the project goals for the future school replacement.

The Board anticipates opening the new school for the 2022-23 school year.

Community Partnerships

In accordance with the Ministry of Education's preferred practice, the WECDSB is developing the plans to construct the new school with a consideration for community partnerships. Interested parties are asked to express their interest in co-building with the Board as soon as possible. The Board plans to evaluate any expressions of interest to select partners based on the provided information.

Next Steps

The Board and +VG Architects intend to have the facility design prepared for autumn if 2020. At this stage, a cost consultant report would be presented to the Ministry for approval.  The approval of the project by the Ministry would allow the Board to issue the project tender, which is planned for late 2020.

During the summer, the Board will seek to pre-qualify contractors for the various aspects of the project. Interested proponents should continue to watch Biddingo for the opportunity to submit proposals.
