Students step up to help disabled man

Mowing independence
Posted on 06/14/2023
piper and studentsAll Rob Piper wanted to do was cut his own grass.

Injured in a cycling accident about five years ago and confined to a wheelchair, he thought he would never again mow his lawn - a simple chore that he loved, but most of us take for granted.

But through a friend who's sister Jennifer Shephard was an Educational Assistant at St. Anne Catholic High School, he connected with Mike Costello, a manufacturing teacher at the Lakeshore school who decided he wanted to fulfill Rob's ambitions.

Costello and his students got to work and made an assistive device that he can connect to his lawnmower so that he can cut his grass independently.
