equity and inclusion

“My friends, we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life." - Pope Francis

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board acknowledges the incidents of violence that have occurred in North America and throughout the world in recent weeks and days. We have seen a number of protests take place and recognize continued  work needs to be done to address systemic racism and discrimination. As a faith-based educational community, we are committed to be part of the solution.

In reference to POLICY A: 14 Promoting and Supporting Equity & Inclusion Within a Catholic Community, we continue to create a culture of responsive pastoral care for all students and their families. Administrators have been part of professional learning sessions that have included understanding, challenging and confronting bias. Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy continues to be a priority of teacher professional learning sessions that have resulted in a number of resources in schools across our system. Although as a system of educators we are committed to addressing and eliminating barriers, specifically racism, we acknowledge that the work is ongoing and we share a responsibility to stand together against racism.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is committed to fostering safe and caring schools that promote respect, inclusion and equity. We continue to develop our knowledge, resources and practices to specifically address priorities of equity which support our mission statement of “Building Communities of Faith, Hope and Service.”
Sincerely,
Fulvio Valentinis Chair, WECDSB
Terry Lyons Director of Education
