New protocols to protect students

Human Trafficking
Posted on 01/30/2022
Human trafficking can have devastating consequences for its victims, and local children are not immune from it happening to them.

“We have already seen evidence of local children being lured into the world of sex trafficking, and as educators, we have a responsibility to warn them about the dangers,” said Rosemary LoFaso, Superintendent of Safe Schools.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is taking a number of steps to prevent human trafficking from occurring. These include:
  • Mandatory training with community partners for staff to learn about sex trafficking and the next steps if a student discloses that they are being trafficked.
  • Creating a protocol for teachers and administrators when supporting students who have disclosed that they are, or have been trafficked.
  • Providing learning opportunities for students, including presentations from community partners.
  • Building relationships with community partners to support educators and students in the classroom.

“The action of schools, families and community partners will help prevent, identify and recognize sex trafficking in order to act quickly to ensure appropriate interventions,” LoFaso said.
