Welcome to Grade 9

What is De-streaming?

De-streaming is an educational approach by which students in Grade 9 are no longer separated into Academic or Applied level courses. Students work collaboratively in an inclusive and engaging learning environment developing critical skills such as problem solving, communication, inquiry and technology skills. Students with a variety of interests can achieve success by working through a wide range of learning opportunities.

Ontario’s Ministry of Education is committed to addressing system discrimination and helping to break down barriers for Indigenous, Black, and racialized students, students from low-income households, students with disabilities, and students with special education needs.  As part of this commitment, the Ministry of Education has eliminated the streaming of students in Grade 9.

A de-streamed Grade 9 Mathematics course was implemented in September 2021. Click here for the Grade 9 Math: a guide for parents resource.
