How Do I Select my Pathway for Grade 10?

Whereas Grade 9 classes are destreamed, in Grade 10, students are required to select between Academic and Applied pathways.  While WECDSB is committed to providing programming that is inclusive and classrooms that are adaptable to meet the needs of all of our students, there are many important factors to consider when selecting courses for Grade 10.  

Students are encouraged to discuss these choices with their parents and caregivers, as well as with their teachers and guidance counsellors.

When choosing courses for Grade 10, students are required to take six specific courses called compulsory courses. These include English, Math, Science, History, Careers/Civics, and Catholic Studies. Students are also required to select two optional courses.  Optional courses allow students to explore areas of interest.  Two alternate courses must also be selected in case of conflicts or course availability.  

Students may also need to fulfill other graduation requirements with their course selections. Reach out to your high school Guidance Counsellor for additional information.

How Do I Select my Pathway for Grade 10?

Important Considerations For Self-Reflection:

• What are my post-secondary destinations? Do they require specific courses?
• What type of learner am I? Will my learning skills reflect the challenges required for success in this pathway?
• What is my commitment to the work required in this pathway? Am I committed to meeting the challenges required to achieve the provincial standard of 70%?
• How do I respond when faced with challenges? Will I self-advocate and ask for help?

Know Your Options:

• Students can take different pathways for different subject areas. For example, Academic English and Applied Science
• Students should choose pathways that challenge them and provide opportunities for success.
• Students who change their post-secondary destinations can meet with their Guidance Counsellors to devise a plan to change pathways, if necessary.
• Each student will have a unique educational journey based on their skill set, individual needs and goals. There can be many paths to reach the same destination!

What is the Difference Between Applied and Academic Courses?

GRADE 10 APPLIED level courses typically lead to College/Mixed level courses in Grades 11 and 12.

APPLIED courses are designed for the learner who:

• Enjoys learning by doing
• Likes to learn and master essential skills and knowledge
• Completes tasks in a directed environment
• Reads for a specific purpose

GRADE 10 ACADEMIC level courses typically lead to University/Mixed level courses in grades 11 and 12.

ACADEMIC courses are designed for the learner who:

• Is self-motivated
• Enjoys reading
• Perseveres when challenged
• Benefits from independence
• Has strong time management skills

GRADE 10 OPEN level courses are introductory courses that are appropriate for all students regardless of post-secondary destination. Many elective or optional courses in Grades 9 and 10 are offered at the Open level.


GRADE 9 and 10 LOCALLY DEVELOPED level courses typically lead to Workplace level courses in Grades 11 and 12.

For students who have been receiving significantly modified programming in Grade 8, Locally Developed courses are available for Grades 9 and 10 in the areas of Math, English, Science and History.

Locally Developed courses assist students in meeting the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requirements.
