Gymnastics is “the mother of all sports” according to Robert Stanescu.
“Every athlete that does gymnastics will develop strength, flexibility, agility, coordination which are the most important things to be able to do any sport in the world,” says Stanescu, who competed for Romania in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Along with his wife Ruxandra, also a former Romanian gymnast, Stanescu is the owner of Alpha Gymnastics Academy, which is home to the WECDSB Gymnastics Academy. Both are skills experts at the academy, who along with Corpus Christi Catholic Middle School teacher Alicia Farrand, help academy students develop their abilities regardless of whether they are high performance athletes or brand new to the sport.
“My focus as a teacher is to help build their confidence and to make sure they have high self esteem, and that they come in and improve at any level,” said Farrand.
