Construction on a new building to replace Catholic Central High School should begin very soon now that a contractor to oversee the project has been selected.

At a special meeting this evening, Board Trustees passed a motion approving Oscar Construction Company Limited to build the new school. With a bid of approximately $26.7 million, Oscar was the successful bidder of the five prequalified contractors to bid on the work.

“Oscar has a proven track record of quality construction projects for our Board and we’re confident that they will build a wonderful new school for our students, our staff and our Catholic Central community,” said Terry Lyons, Director of Education.

St. Christopher, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Holy Name are among the Catholic elementary schools Oscar built for WECDSB. They also built St. Joseph’s and St. Anne Catholic High Schools.

Bernie Mastromattei, the Trustee for the ward in which the new school will be built, said he was thrilled with the selection.

“Our community has been eagerly waiting for this announcement, so this is wonderful news,” he said. “We are very excited about seeing shovels in the ground and construction getting started on this project.”

Oscar will work with +VG Architects, which was hired by the Board in January of 2020 and has extensive experience designing innovative schools throughout Ontario.

The new school will be built on an 11-acre piece of property between Ouellette Avenue and McDougall, less than a kilometer south of its present location on Tecumseh Road East.
Construction is expected to begin as soon as possible. The Board anticipates opening the school for the 2022-23 school year and Oscar has committed to completing the project on time.
