Meet Nathan Cherry

My School

There were two key factors in my decision to enroll at Holy Names, it was the English option in my area and the glowing reputation of the senior soccer team. Coming from a French first-language elementary school, and knowing I did not plan to complete my post-secondary studies in French, I decided it would be advantageous to transition from French in high school. Being that my sport of choice has always been soccer, Holy Names was the place to be, claiming WECSSAA gold for 4 consecutive years prior to my enrollment. We have added three, going for another! Go Knights!

My Biggest Challenge

Very commonly amongst students, time management is a large challenge. Balancing work, school and extracurricular is always a challenge. Earlier this year, this challenge was exponentially increased with the loss of my father. I have, however, managed to continue my job as a web developer for a National Investment company as well as maintaining my grades and adding the lead programming role for the Knights Robotics team. Soon the soccer season will begin at school although I also play club soccer year-round outside. As I increase the items on my schedule, this challenge is one I continue to manage.

Making a Positive Difference

While I have never gone without food, I recognize this is not the case for everyone. For the past 3 years, through the growing season, my family and I have made regular trips to my relative's farm to collect excess vegetables. We would then deliver the extra produce to multiple local schools. Once delivered, these vegetables are used for breakfast programs for hungry students or to save the schools' culinary programs money allowing schools to redistribute the savings. On occasion, we have sent vegetables to a local religious organization which feeds people on a weekly basis.

My Accomplishments

Academically, I have continued to grow in my accomplishments throughout my high school career. I have achieved honour roll each year and have increased my average annually. I am currently maintaining my 93% average as of midterm. Athletically, I have been involved in multiple Knights teams starting in ninth grade with junior soccer and cross country. In grades ten and eleven I focused on senior soccer where we qualified for OFSAA both years and won bronze last year. Additionally, I am involved with Robotics and lead the Programming team.

The person that influenced me most

There have been many people who have influenced me throughout my educational career, however, it is not one but two people who have influenced me the most, my parents. They have always pushed me to go the extra mile whether it be in or out of school. I was raised with their hardworking mentality, to never accept failure and always do my best. They taught me many lessons, directly or indirectly. I believe the most important, and most difficult to accept, is to treat every moment like it's the last because at any moment it can be.
