Meet Abby Coutinho

My School

I have an older brother who is on the Autism spectrum and Holy Names has always believed in inclusion. He was never separated from his peers and because of this he thrived and was placed on a path of success. I admire the staff here and the effort they put into including all students. I have immense pride for everything my school offers, from outstanding academics to amazing school spirit.

Every time I walk into my school I feel safe and prepared to live up to Holy Name's motto, Allis Non Sibi; for others, not oneself. I am lucky to call myself a Knight.

Making a Positive Difference

I believe making a positive difference starts with the little details that add up to make a big impact. I have always felt a great need in my heart to help others, and have tried to do so from a very young age. Starting with raising money for individuals living in poverty in Haiti during the third grade, to collecting over a thousand dollars to have an auditorium row dedicated to Kevin Siddall, a fellow classmate who passed away from cancer.

Opportunities to do good within my school have encouraged me to expand into my community and volunteer at the Windsor-Essex Humane Society. Here, I have the honour and privilege to bring happiness and dignity to those who do not have a voice, qualities that are continuously promoted at Holy Names.

My Biggest Challenge

My biggest challenge has always been myself. Having dealt with mental health issues for the past four years made it difficult to maintain good grades and a positive attitude. Yet, with the support of teachers and fellow students I found the strength to be my best self everyday.

My Accomplishments

I am proud of maintaining honour roll status all four years despite struggling with my mental health. Also, being accepted into the psychology and sociology program at The University of Windsor and being the sole organizer to raise money for plaque honouring the life of Kevin Siddall is a major accomplishment.

The person that influenced me most

It is difficult to choose just one person who has inspired me to succeed, as several individuals have impacted my life. Although I believe the Campus Minister at Holy Names, Mrs. Gosling, has influenced me the most. She has seen me in my lowest of moments and has helped me build myself up to my highest accomplishments. I admire that she is never afraid to use tough love to push me into triumph. For these reasons, Mrs. Gosling has helped shaped me into who I am today, and I will be forever grateful for that.
