She’s only in Grade 10, but Sohila Sidhu has already developed a prototype for an artificial pancreas that could help people living with diabetes.

“It administers insulin allowing blood glucose levels to be returned back to normal,” she explains, “and once they are back to normal, it stops administering insulin because it’s not needed anymore.”

Sohila recently took part in the 59th annual Windsor Regional Science Technology and Engineering Fair which ran from March 28 to April 9, and her prototype won the University of Windsor Faculty of Science Award.

With that, she became one of only six students from Windsor-Essex to participate in the Canada-Wide Science Fair, which is being held virtually May 16-20 from Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Sohila comes by her talents naturally - both of her parents are professors of biotechnology at the University of Windsor. She hopes that someday her prototype could become an actual device that would help diabetes patients.
