Making sure that every student is able to join our sports academies regardless of their financial circumstances is the goal of the Father Larry Cup event.

“Experience has taught us that students in our sports academies tend to perform better academically because they feel a stronger sense of engagement with their school,” said Dan Fister, Executive Superintendent of Innovation and Experiential Learning. “So we make sure that any student who wants to enroll in an academy but might be struggling financially is supported through our bursary fund. The Father Larry Cup is event is how we support that fund.”

Named after Board Chaplain and avid Detroit Red Wings fan Father Larry Brunet, the event kicks off with a fun staff hockey game, followed by cocktails and dinner. There will be a silent auction with some great prizes, as well as other raffles throughout the evening.

“We’ve seen massive growth in our academies and are anticipating more than 700 students in them come September, so the need is great,” said Fister. “We’re really hoping that the WECDSB community supports this event, because our academies offer so much for our students. This event is just a great way to support kids.”

This year’s annual event is on Friday, May 31. The puck drops at 5 p.m. at the Tecumseh Arena, followed by a banquet at 6 p.m. at the Torino Hall at 12049 Tecumseh Road East.

Tickets for the game and the banquet are $60. For the game only, they are $20, and for the banquet only they are $50.
