“ This is where we live”

Installation Boxes

Process
Students selected a topic from a list which we had generated together in answering the question, “What makes up Essex County?”

It was important that each of the listed areas was part of the work and that each student was working on a special interest. We began our project with a different concept from that of the final framework.

Originally, we had decided to create the work as a single piece on one wall with the individual boxes forming a unified work. However when we saw the student proposals, we realized that a major design change was required. We observed that they had begun to create outside their wooden boxes. As a result, we decided that while the pieces were unified in theme, they needed to stand alone as part of a larger conceptual work. Each piece had a unique set of design problems and required individual instruction.

Included here are other boxes that were created but not permanently installed at the site and remained on exhibition at Villanova.
