Burmese Python

Common Name: Burmese Python

Scientific Name: Python molurus bivittatus

Where it Lives: Southeast Asia including Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, and Indonesia.

What it Eats: This carnivorous snake eats mice and small rats when it is younger, and larger rats, small mammals like rabbits, and chickens as it gets older.

Interesting Facts: This giant snake can reach up to 20 feet in length, weigh up to 200 pounds, and live for 25 years. They are popular as pets, but most owners do not know what to do with them once they have reached their adult size. When frequently handled with care and respect, these snakes can become very docile.

The Living Lab's Burmese Pythons: These pythons are another claim to fame for the Lab. A large portion of the classroom, including a wall section with a window leading out into the hallway, was sectionned off for these snakes. We have one male and one female. A Metallica-loving member of the Living Lab Club has affectionately nicknamed them "James" and "Hetfield".
